Rejoice and Give Thanks

On an episode of Golden Girls, the ladies had just received news that Sophia the matriarch of the group, would be leaving the house to move in with her other daughter.  Saddened by the news, the ladies collectively reflected on all the good stories Sophia shared with them and the tasty Italian meals she prepared.  Afterwards, Rose shared more disheartening news; she and Blanch competed for the leading role in a play of which, the role was given to Rose while the lesser role was given to Blanch.  As Blanch portrayed anger and humiliated Rose, she said “What a horrible day this has been.”  If Blanch could have made an exit from her “pity party” to find a quiet place, it would have given her time to work through her spiraling feelings.

The place of pity can produce feelings of darkness, emptiness, loneliness and despair.  The quiet place gives us an opportunity to meditate and develop an attitude of gratitude, being thankful for where we are and knowing that wherever God “plants” us He expects us to “bloom”.  This would be a time to bloom in character, bloom in integrity, bloom in grace, celebrate one another as we celebrate life… reminisce and glean from the time spent with others and most of all… give thanks.

This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Ps. 118:24)

Forgiving Is Healing

According to Karen Swartz, M.D., director of the Mood Disorders Consultation Clinic at Johns Hopkins Medicine, forgiveness is a balm for the mind and body.  “Chronic stress or anger puts us in fight-or-flight mode, which revs heart rate and blood pressure,” she says.  “Forgiveness has a calming effect that strengthens our immune system and dramatically decreases the risk of disease.”

The Salt Of The Earth

Salt is one of the most stable compounds on Earth.  It becomes ineffective when it’s defiled; so in order to maintain it’s effectiveness, it has to be kept in it’s purest form.  It only takes a small amount to accomplish it’s purpose of adding flavor or preserving.  It only takes a small amount of your spiritual character, wisdom and witness to effect a dark, cold world.

You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses it’s savor, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. Matt. 5:13
